This air fryer grilled cheese sandwich is not only comforting, but delicious as well.
Growing up, grilled cheese sandwiches were a staple for our weekend lunches.
We'd eat open faced grilled cheese sandwiches a lot. Or, if our lunch was really fancy, we'd get a grilled cheese sandwich made with two slices of bread and cooked in a pan on the stove.
You'll find these air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches are just as delicious as ones made on the stove top, but you get the fun of using an air fryer.

💭 Tips for Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
If you find your top piece of bread is having a hard time staying on the sandwich, you can use a toothpick to hold the sandwich together while cooking.
🥘 Ingredients
- 2 slices sourdough bread or another good crusty bread
- Mild cheddar cheese, grated (or you can use cheese slices or packaged shredded cheese)
- Monterey Jack cheese, grated (or your favorite cheese)
- 1 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 tbsp mayonnaise
Variations
There are so many different ways you can make air fryer grilled cheese. Some of our favorite ways of adding a bit of variety to our grilled cheese sandwiches include:
- use thousand island as the spread for inside the sandwich
- add a bit of deli mustard (or my kids love jalapeno mustard) for inside the sandwich.
- use swiss cheese or mozzarella cheese instead of Monterey Jack
- add a slice of ham and make it a grilled ham & cheese

🔪 Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your air fryer to 360°F for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Grate cheese if you are using a block of cheese.
Step 3: Spread butter on one side of both pieces of bread.
Step 4: Pile the grated cheese on the buttered side of one slice bread.
Step 5: Top the cheese with the other bread slice, buttered side against the cheese. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich, place it into the preheated air fryer basket with the mayonnaise side on the bottom.
Step 6. Spread a fine layer of mayonnaise on the top of the sandwich.
Step 7: Cook for 5 minutes at 360°F, flip over and continue cooking for 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
Step 8. Serve immediately.

Ingredients

- 1 tbsp mayonnaise
Instructions
1. Preheat Air Fryer to 360 degrees F for 5 minutes.
2. Grate cheese if you are using block cheese.
3. Spread butter on one side of both pieces of bread
4. Pile the grated cheese on one side of the bread
5. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich, place it into the preheated air fryer basket with the mayonnaise side facing down
6. Spread a line layer of mayonnaise on the other side
7. Cook for 5 minutes at 360 degrees F, flip over and continue cooking for 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy
8. Serve immediately
Notes
You can also use cheese slices or shredded packaged cheese.
