Making this air fryer Monte Cristo sandwich recipe is what made me love my air fryer.
I liked using my air fryer before, but this was just so easy to make. Just put it all in, set the timer and wait for it to go off. Flip the sandwich, set the timer again and the next thing you know, it's done!
I love how I don't have to babysit grilling this sandwich. My kids and husband all loved these sandwiches and I'm so happy my friend told me how to make these.
What is a Monte Cristo Sandwich?
These air fryer Monte Cristo sandwiches have ham and cheese layered inside them, the bread is dipped in a batter and the whole sandwich is air fried in the air fryer. Enjoy this sandwich dipped into a bit of raspberry preserves
The traditional Monte Cristo is a deep fried sandwich, but we are using the air fryer for this recipe.
You end up with a delicious sandwich that is battered and fried. It tastes like a combination of French toast and a grilled cheese sandwich with ham.

Best Bread
If you are wondering the best bread to use in this Monte Cristo sandwich, honestly, I think Texas toast is the best bread for this recipe. You can definitely use whatever bread you have, such as white bread.
The Texas toast bread is thick, which is great when dipping into the batter.
Leftovers
This sandwich is definitely best eaten freshly cooked. The bread tends to become soggy as it cools down.
As a warning, these sandwiches are filling! If you tend to be a light eater, I would suggest either splitting a sandwich with someone or make half a sandwich.
Tips for Monte Cristo Recipe
The first time making the sandwich might seem a bit complicated trying to get the sandwich into the batter and then into the air fryer without making a mess or having everything fall apart.
If you are having a hard time dipping the sandwich into the batter, try to dip one slice of bread in the batter, place it batter side down in the air fryer basket. Then, assemble the sandwich on top of that slice of bread, then dip the other slice of bread and stick it on top of the assembled ingredients. Experiment and find what works best for you.
The air fryer parchment paper is so great to use when making this sandwich. Just make sure not to have it in your air fryer when preheating, otherwise it may fly up into the heating element and catch fire.
Variations
Try some of these to make different variations of the sandwich:
Cheese - change out the Swiss cheese for gruyere cheese or use a cheese combination with swiss and gruyere. You can also use cheddar cheese or American cheese if that's what you have on hand or prefer.
Dijon mustard - For an easy twist add some dijon mustard for a tangy sandwich that is perfect with ham and cheese
Sub out the deli ham with leftover ham, or for some other type of lunch meat.
